THE COEXISTENCE OF REDUCTIONIST MECHANISM AND HOLISM
Abstract
The reductionist perspective of disease looks for fundamental mechanisms to explain the underlying causes of the disease, explaining life throughout the empirical world and sectioning
complex entities into its simplest components. Holism, in contrast, defines the whole as much more than the addition of the parts, considering the development of a network that includes the complexity of the phenomenon. So, is the reductionist approach enough to cover all the  aspects of the health-disease process? Thus, a holistic view emerges to elucidate the disease, understanding the importance of linking the analysis of biological networks to the environmental, social, and political context; we see that medical research should not be restricted to the molecular level. In this way, a biosocial approach to medicine allows us to better understand and predict the complexity of human biology and disease.
